Hey, if you've been thinking about upgrading your laptop or monitor lately, you might want to act fast-DRAM memory prices have absolutely exploded this year. In the fourth quarter of 2025, global DRAM contract prices jumped a massive 171.8% year-over-year, hitting record highs, all thanks to the insane demand from AI servers and high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

Big players like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are shifting their production lines heavily toward HBM for AI chips, which has left regular DDR5 and DDR4 memory in short supply. Spot prices for 16Gb DDR5 chips went from around $6.84 in September to $27.20 by December-that's nearly a 300% spike! This shortage is directly impacting the cost of building devices with LCD panels, like laptops, monitors, and even TVs.

Even though LCD panel prices themselves have stayed pretty stable (some sizes even dropped a bit), the soaring DRAM costs are squeezing manufacturers' margins. Brands are already warning that LCD notebooks and LCD displays could see price hikes of 15-30% heading into 2026. It's a ripple effect across the whole IT sector.

In the classic LCD vs OLED debate, this might actually give LCD products a temporary edge on value. OLED screens are pricier to produce anyway, and with memory costs adding pressure, affordable IPS LCD laptops and monitors could look even more appealing for budget-conscious buyers who want reliability without burn-in risks.

Analysts are saying the DRAM crunch isn't letting up anytime soon, so if you're eyeing a new LCD gaming monitor or a high-RAM LCD ultrabook, grabbing one now could save you some cash before the increases hit shelves. Overall, the LCD display market is feeling the pinch, but mature LCD panel supply chains might help keep things from getting totally out of control.
